A Rude Awakening: Simulated Truth

Driving danger alert program visits High Tech High

Firefighters use a hydraulic rescue tool called Jaws of Life to pry apart metal of the wrecked car. This tool is used in real crashes to clear a path for rescue workers to extract survivors.

The Rude Awakening program came to the High Technology High School in the Lincroft section of Middletown on May 12 to demonstrate the worst case scenario ramifications of intoxicated or distracted driving to students.

Township firefighters, police officers, and EMTs were all on hand to give the students a sample of real time accident scene horrors. The program is characteristically brought to high schools during prom and graduation seasons to give students a "scared straight" view of what can happen when attention is diverted or judgement is skewed by intoxication and/or other distractions while driving.
