Assemblyman Dancer Introduces 'Snookiville' Law Monday [POLL]

The law aims to give New Jersey municipalities a say over reality TV productions.

Worried that your town may become the next "Snookiville?" Well, a bill introduced Monday aims to arm New Jersey municipalities with the right to regulate reality TV shows.

Dubbed the "Snookiville Law," the bill introduced today by Assemblyman Ronald Dancer (R-12) would allow towns to impose conditions on shows such as the "Snooki & JWoww" production that began filming in Manchester in August or the previous installments of "Jersey Shore" that filmed in Seaside Heights and Toms River.

“The popularity of MTV’s 'Jersey Shore' and other reality shows can attract crowds to a community,” Dancer said in a news release. “That can be great for local businesses and a costly challenge to a town’s ability to control crowds and protect public safety."

The bill would allow towns to adopt licensing ordinances or impose certain regulations on the production, such as requiring producers to ensure public safety by paying for an additional police presence, according to the release.

Filming of "Snooki & JWoww" was initially rejected by Toms River and Point Beach, and 495 Productions pulled out of Morristown to finally settle down at a home in Manchester. Although Manchester residents report that the guidettes have been relatively quiet neighbors, the Jersey Shore cast developed a reputation for causing trouble in Seaside during the filming of their reality series, which concluded this summer.

"[The law] will help local officials make sure that the attention reality stars like Snooki and JWoww bring to their town benefits local residents and businesses,” Dancer said in the release.

THIS STATE SHOULD BE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT ITS CROOKED POLITICIANS THAN SNOOKY. AT LEAST WHEN IT COMES TO SNOOKY YOU HAVE A CHOICE TO WATCH HER OR CHANGE THE CHANNEL, WITH THE POLITICIANS , BY THE TIME THEY GET CAUGHT FAR TOO MUCH DAMAGE IS ALREADY DONE. SO WAKE UP NEW JERSEY!

Make the production companies pick up the tab for added security. Put a tax and a "back end" clause that generates revenue for the townships amd residents who have to deal with interruptions and headaches of added traffic, attention, etc. then use 100% of the revenue generated due to the tax and additional back end revenue for public works, police, education, parks, etc. where the funds go should be determined by the residents of the community prior to start of filming (ex: 60% education, 30% parks, 10% senior center) to avoid any controversy over the amount of money available (set a threshold if amount exceeds 'X' amount it offsets property tax if money is lower then 'X' amount 100% goes to public library). Make the tax reasonable and the security adequate and hammer the offenders on serious offenses (again all laid out prior to filming). If the show is popular the inconvenience is offset by the knowledge everyone in town gains something. If its a bust you get a few new computers in the library. Either way residents have interest in success of show and are a little more tolerant because they voted on where money goes and know where it is going and small business is not missing opportunity to capitalize on added revenue in tough economy. Encourages small business owners to reside on community also because then they can double dip on opportunity. Not difficult people and I believe it's an old idea.....something about "FOR the PEOPLE by the PEOPLE".

Too much government. Let each town/borough adopt land use/zoning regulations to control these type of uses. I agree that production companies should be responsible for additional costs of security, etc. but let each town regulate.

Does anyone else realize that this is an obstruction to your freedoms? As much as some would argue this, Television, or video production is a form of art. This bill will limit the creation of this. Thats why they are calling it snookieville to hide the fact that this bill will allow places to control ALL FORMS of video production. Next time you have a wedding and want to have your video in a park you better be ready to get some permits and pay big bucks. Or what if a student wants to make a contraversial film? Now the state just needs to raise the permits for everything so the student cant make it. Who decides who pays what? Who regulates this and what is to stop them from putting their political agenda into to (an example would be a documentary about the governer. This law would allow them to say "you need to pay thousands of dollars in permits to make this film because of what it may cause" and the truth never gets out. Give me my freedoms back!

Not the biggest issue facing us, but it does make sense. Have the production companies cover the increased cost of municipal services - why should we pay? I doubt it would deter production companies from using NJ as a venue. This type of measure is in place in many other states and localities. It's a local option, not a requirement. Municipalities can choose whether to use the authority and if so, how to do it. Hope the bill passes speedily so our Legislature can move on to weightier matters.

Towns already can make these laws. Toms River already has one and that was one reason that the production went elsewhere. Will I need a permit to video the parade or an accident?

And no, I don't live in a trailer nor do I live in a "McMansion", a house by the water or can afford to live in Marlboro. I work two jobs to make ends meet and pay my bills and mortgage. When I was growing up, I was taught people like me were "hard-working, blue collar Americans"- not lower class citizens. It's people like you that make the world such a hostile place to live in.

MArlboro mann sweetie, I live in a HOME that I bought 18 yrs ago ( 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath) a block in from the river & a bike ride from the beach ... having a Mc mansion doesn't make someone rich, usually mean you spent way to much money for a house that was put together as cheap as possible& chance are owe more on your home & taxes then its worth... SUCKERS from NY fall for it every time

Sweetheart, I've lived in Marlboro for over 30 years and I pay in taxes for each quarter what I used to pay on an annual basis when I moved in. If you think thats perfectly ok then you're entitled to your opinion. There is a lot wrong in this state which politicians refuse to address. Their reluctance is due to the influence of the career politicos that reside in NJ's numerous slum cities (Newark, Camden, Trenton, Jersey City etc) which suck up our tax dollars and give us nothing in return. I would rather see a political debate on excessive taxation than smokescreens such as NFL refs, bear hunts and Snookie. You are correct that these issues may be addressed by the time I retire or die and ultimately leave this overburdened state.

RealNJMom, seriously, why all the anger towards "McMansions" and the families who enjoy living in newer developments? Such a sweeping disdain, and very insulting to many hardworking couples who want to enjoy living a suburban life; it's also very insulting to the developer, builder and the craftspeople who make their livings building new homes.

Comments here seem to tap wellsprings of anger. May I mollify?

A couple of years ago while we were on vacation abroad, we chatted amiably with a couple from the UK. "Where are you from in the States?" ("The States" - cute...) "We live down the Jersey Shore, as we say." "Oh, my, is it really like that? Do you know Snooker and those people on that show?" A moment's pause, and all four of us burst out laughing.
I had a similar conversation when The Sopranos was (were?) being broadcast in the UK years ago . "You don't know any organized criminals?" "No, and we know very few organized honest people either, not really being in that category ourselves."
Smile. This is a good place to live.

Let's summarize realNJmom's thoughts:
1-If you are against high taxes and political corruption, you are either from NYC or Northern NJ
2-Rather than stay and reform the system, you should simply leave the state.
3-People who live in housing other than a trailer are inherently bad people.
4-If you disagree with realNJmom, you are considered misinformed.
5-Theresa Guidice is her role model for all NJ Moms.

Thank you for sharing your opinion in this forum.

Very few if any of the NJ shows were born and raised in New Jersey. Most come from New York where rude ,crude and anything goes is more the behavior.Sorry just speaking the truth.New Jersey has it's problems and these shows make us look like sex crazed, drunken, crude, rude, money before family scum.If I was born somewhere else these shows would make me NOT want to travel here. They are just helping the dumbing down of America, and most people are so dumb they are oblivious to what is happening around them.Oh and NJ drivers became so damn rude on the road after we were invaded by New Yawkers!

Sweetheart, pardon my metaphors but I associate my "trailer" analysis with closed minded people like you and RNJM. If you look at the beginning of this post, I was commenting on the corruption and waste in Trenton. Instead of sharing my concern, you and your cohort told me to simply move out which is the coward's way out. The system needs to be reformed and having moved here from NY 32 years ago, I have the right to comment as I see fit. Perhaps you enjoy struggling to get by, but channeling your negative energy to the source of our problems (Trenton) instead of toward me would be a first positive step.

I am so glad I live in Western Monmouth because there is a perverse attitude pervasive in the eastern part of the county. Don't come crying when your day to day living costs spiral out of control. I'm sure our elected officials in Trenton are doing a wonderful job.
