If he pointed it at the police officer the police officer had ever right to do what he did.

So lets just come right out and say it, did he shoot an unarmed man or not?

My thoughts go out to the family and friends of both the 52-year-old man and the officer. I am sure there will be many comments about this and that; yet in the end one man is gone and one officer has to live with the fact that he is responsible for that. Man in a parking lot at a bar making noise. He has something in his hand. Officer thinks it is a gun and commands the drunk to drop it. The drunk, knowing he has no gun, fails to comply and so is shot by the PO. Sounds about right for these badge-heavy goons.

Not sure if this posted before but will repost. My sympathy to the Officer who had to make that decision and stick with it. I would want that officer as my partner because the officer did not hesitate. Could have gone the other way and the officer would be dead you know. Badge heavy goons? what a way to describe the guy who puts his life on the line for you every day just my showing up and caring. We put these guys on the street and them give them 25 reasons to not do their job or to afraid of what will happen when they do their job. Police officers are tested for intelligence and if they score too high, they are not hired. I agree it is a thankless job that needs to be done, much like garbage collection and running sewerage plants. The gun draws the bullies that get off on wielding power. Sure there are good POs but these are few and far between, grossly outnumbered by sociopaths looking to get in their 20 and get out with a fat pension.

First off none of us that weren't there know what happened or not, secondly if an officer tells me to drop what's in my hand while pointing his weapon at me drunk or not weapon, bottle, eyeglasses whatever I would drop it, and lastly for all we know this man of 52 could have gotten shot anywhere and may have just died from blood loss or numerous other reasons. Let's see- he impersonated a public servant, has been arrested for other gun related charges and now people are wondering if he had a gun or not, really? It's unfortunate, but I'm glad the PO took this action, not to shoot him dead, but to protect the rest of us citizens from thugs like this. If this guy would have been any other place, maybe a residential neighborhood, this could have been way worse and innocent people could have been hurt.

I think the Beachwood Police are the best and trust their judgment calls.They are very community involved . I feel safe knowing this officer is out there doing his job.My heart goes out to both families.

There are good and bad in all professions. and the law certainly isn't always fair. Criminals are being released with slaps on their hand only to commit crimes again. This officer did what he needed to protect himself and the public that were present at High Velocity. If someone is pointing a weapon or threatening your life you don't aim for the leg or arm so they can still shoot you. Really people?

My thoughts are with Bruce Harris and his family. He is an experienced officer and a good person, and nothing I've seen do far would lead me to believe he didn't do exactly what the job called for in this situation.

Beachwood Police Officer killed a known criminal/ex-convict...who was yielding a gun and told to drop it more than 3 times.

Kudos to the Officer who rid the world of another criminal. I'm sure everyone in High Velocity and the Beachwood Pub is happy the Officer stopped him as who knows what he would have done? Perhaps gone on a killing spree in one of the local bars or stores? We don't know....maybe he would have gone home....maybe not. Do you want to be on the other end of that "maybe".....I certainly don't.

We now know Mark did in fact have a weapon and Bruce directed him to drop it. Given the facts of this event and knowing the every officer knows and dreads when they join the force they too may one day be placed at this very same scene. However not everyone going to a sports bar expects this type of dangerous drama to be played out. Please keep in mind that there are Innocent families that are now suffering. Police officers in nj are trained to shoot first ask questions later

Police are not perfect, but have a difficult job to do. They are the ones that run into the bad situations that you and I run away from! It was a terrible situation and a choice had to be made, one that you have to be ready to make if you become a police officer. And that split second decision that an officer makes is debated by all the arm chair analyzers who were not there, and some of whom do not know the law or anything about police work. I am very sorry a man lost his life....but he had many choices leading up to that last choice not to drop the gun, and he was not making good ones. I know people who tried to help that man turn his life around....but he went back to crime....so many other previous bad choices in his life. It is very sad to see someone's life be lived this way and to end this way, but it was the result of his own choices. The officer will get counseling to help him deal with the trauma, and I hope he goes on to continue serving the public as a police officer. I pray for the families of all involved, that God will comfort them. And hopefully people will learn from this incident to avoid a life of poor choices and law-breaking. Life is too precious a gift to waste or to use causing hurt and harm to others.

As society we give our police officers a certain amount of power to keep the public safe. Yet, when they do their job they are criticized for it! It is sad that a person lost their life, but it was not as if he was taking his dog out for a walk, he was armed!

If any one off you people who are critingicizing this officer were in that parking lot last night when this man was out there doing what he was doing and looking the way he did you would be ducking, running for cover and begging for this officer to shoot the man so that you could all get home to your families. You would not be feeling sorry for the guy. When someone you know and love is in law enforcement and they go off to work you tell them to "Be Safe" every time they leave you. I am very happy this officer got to go home to his family and that he didn't second guess himself. He kept himself and anybody else who could have been in that parking lot alive. Good for him!

I have a friend that was with the NYPD working what was the most murderous precinct he chased a young teen into an alley he hesitated and now has half his stomach. Thank God he had a partner otherwise he would be dead. You only have a split second to make that decision. I personally would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Police officers have to make split second decisions regarding their own safety and the safety of the public. From this guys history with the law, he had to have known that when a cop tells you to drop your weapon...you drop your weapon. Had the cop hesitated, he may be the one dead. Sorry that anyone died here, but the cop did exactly what he had to do if the recounting of the story is accurate.

Listen, Its a question if the officer felt threatened. The guy could of had a hair brush in his hand but when the officer said drop it and he didnt, then he raised his hand with something in it. He didn't comply and the officer felt that his life was in danger. Trust me the officer will never be the same.....

After spending the day in criminal court this week, I walked away wondering how cops even bother going to work every day. The system is fatally flawed and upside down. God Bless those who risk their lives to protect and serve.

I hope you all read the "man in the mirror" posting. I too have got to criminal court. I would recommend all of you go to your local court at least once a year, so you can see what our men and women in uniform go through on a daily basis. Maybe when you see it for yourself, some of you will change your opinions. Perhaps you can start looking at your politicians with a new set of eyes, since they are the ones who make the laws what they are, and so on. In my opinion, it will make you smarter voters too.

P.S. - For those of you who think the same as "Noodles". Perhaps you have lived a sheltered life, please educate yourselves, and REALLY think about what you would do in the same situation. Not that police officers are perfect, they are people just like us, no matter how much you may not want them to be. I thank God we have them, our firefighters, and our armed forces. In my opinion, you should too, and pray for them to go home safely to their families.

Thank goodness they do go to work every day. They deserve a lot more respect than they generally get from people.

Also, for those of you who seem so embittered against the police officers, that there is no way they could do anything right in your eyes. Don't call them. I'm sure you have the same attitude toward our armed forces. Move to another country. Either way, you would probably be happier in another place other than the USA. The officer did what he had to do - his job!! He is there to serve and protect us, the public. The victim had a gun on him (why was he carrying it?) alot of other people could have been injured or possibly died if this guy went back into the bar and went bolistic. Looking at the post of his record, maybe he wanted to be shot to end his loser life.He was released from prison 4 months ago. Terroristic threats, unlawful weapons possession, impersonation of public servant, geesh. A police officer is a human being, he leaves his home everyday to serve and protect. His wife, children, etc. never know if when he walks out that door if he will be back after his shift. I applaud the officer for what he had to do, plus the fact the "victim", who has disregarded the law in the past, seems to me was not "rehabilitated" nor did he try to be. The shoppe that is opening in Beachwood is no assumption as it says in broad lettering right outside that it will be selling knives and other items that they call "gifts". So it is a weapon shoppe that has a skull and crossbones on the sign. The sign is home_made at best and a rental. I am sure they are within the guidelines of the NJ State and if you recall the shop in Toms River "Guns and Roses" is applying to buy and sell legal weapons too. So say as you wish, but the police department is "way" on top of every trashy looking new establishments that depict "seedy" looking signs and therefore one more thing to have to watch for trouble. And oh just so you know, I use to work at the Heating and cooling place that is now a Chiropractor establishment located next to the High Velocity. Several years ago it was the Thursday night police watch from the building window to the High Velocity for the drugs and license plates of those "dealing" who would show up. It was a good location and many handcuffs were placed on persons with outstanding warrants or drug activity. So I know exactly what I am talking about since I was "there" for the changing of the guards.Been living in Beachwood for over 25 years and have compliments for our Police Department. And believe me the Officer knew exactly who he was I am sure since they know who gets out of jail and is lurking around.

There is talk all around town that MT had a cigarette lighter that looked like a gun, the Prosecutors Office at this point says it was a gun. Where there any crime scene photos of the gun in his hand or on the ground next to him? Does that bar have video of the parking lot that captured all of this? Did Harris point his car with headlights at the MT and was his dash cam on? It won't change anything he was given a command but didn't respond correctly and the officer did what he thought was the right thing, but the truth is what the public demands. Some had the Duke players already going to jail until the truth came out. So, gun or lighter?

i live in Beachwood and that bar has had issues since it OPENED!!! Maybe the politicions and the town will now be able to close this cancer in our town and keep the other questionable people out of our town!!! Good job Srgt Harris!!!

First of all, you need to learn how to spell~(politicions?). Second, it's not the bar; it's some of the morons that happen to stumble into the place! The owners~(John & Sean) are good people & they do their best to try to keep idiots like the guy that got shot out of their establishmment. Unfortunately~ that's not so easy to do these days and I'm sure that every bar owner will tell you that too! Like the old saying goes: "There's a rotten apple in every barrel!"
