A car on Route 35 erupted into flames last night.

Last night shortly before midnight, at 11:52 p.m., a car fire broke out in Middletown on Route 35 south near Kings Highway and all involved escaped injury.

According to Middletown Old Village Fire Company Captain David D'Arcy, "The operator of a sport utility vehicle (a Hyundai Tuscon SUV) contacted police and reported fire coming from his wheel well. The operator had pulled his vehicle onto the south bound shoulder of the highway, just a few hundred feet from the entrance to Station 11, the Old Village Fire Company."

The fire, D'Arcy added, had extended into the engine compartment, causing it to go up in flames. Police were on the scene and Old Village firefighters extinquished the fire. There were no injuries.
