Donor Offers $100 Gift Cards To Middletown's Storm-Ravaged Homeowners

The gift cards can be spent on items needed to help refurnish, replace or restock storm-ravaged homes.

Thanks to a donation by a private donor to the Middletown Disaster Relief Fund, homeowners in North Middletown, Port Monmouth, Belford and Leonardo still feeling the sting of Hurricane Sandy can sign up to receive a $100 gift card to Target.

But to qualify, homeowners need to hurry and register by noon on Tuesday, Jan. 8. They also will have to be able to pick the gift card up in person on Sunday morning, Jan. 13 at the Middletown Arts Center. There is a limit of one per family.

To register, go to www.middletownnj.orgResidents who registered with the Citizen Communication Center for alerts should log in and join the User Group ‘Sandy Relief.’ New registrants should select the User Group ‘Sandy Relief’ as part the registration form.

The donor or the amount of the gift was not named in a press release Friday afternon. But Mayor Tony Fiore said that information might be shared on Jan. 13, when its volunteers hand out the cards at the MAC.

Fiore is chairman of the The Middletown Disaster Fund, which was formed in the weeks after Sandy in an effort to formalize and organize a wave of goodwill towards residents. The independent, non-profit 501c3 is overseen by a board of various community members from business, school district and citizen groups.

"Aside from this gift card donation we're receiving, we have raised about $200,000," said Fiore. The money has flowed from personal donations, offerings from the business community, and residents.

"We're hoping to raise a couple of hundred thousand. We're still raising money."

Thats good to hear! While we all wait for the government to get it together,it's nice to still see people helping people that need it.

I agree, but I'd like to know how many residents apply for the gift card when the only "damage" they suffered is the loss of food because of losing power for several days.

Why Marylou? Are those who only lost food not entitled to charity? What about those who were lucky enough to weather the storm but live pay check to pay check (like many in this state) and have little mouths to feed? Are you a busy-body Marylou?

Very impressive. I continue to be amazed at how much the mayor has done, and continues to do for the town in the wake of this horrible storm.

Gee Tom, I didn't know local mayors were also in charge of distributing federal funds. Way to find the negative in a positive story.

I have lived in Middletown (Belford and Port Monmouth) for almost all of my life (66+ years) and never seen anything like this storm. I did lose alot due to Sandy, but I am making my way back from this disaster. Middletown is, without a doubt, the greatest community to live in and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
