Alleged Aggravated Sexual Assault

The following information was obtained directly from Middletown Township Police Department and county records. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Hazlet man has been arrested and charged with committing aggravated sexual assault on a woman in Middletown.

Middletown Police Detective Kelly Godley arrested James C. Bryer, of 15 Limerick Place, Hazlet, on April 24. Bryer was charged with aggravated sexual assault based on an incident that allegedly occurred on or about Feb. 25 during which Bryer allegedly witnessed the victim consume a large dose of Xanax, “rendering her incapacitated,” the complaint warrant said.

He then allegedly committed the aggravated sexual assault on her, which constitutes penetration, knowing her physically and mentally incapacitated state, the complaint added.

The aggravated sexual assault charge is a first-degree offense.

Bryer was held on $100,000 bail, with no 10 percent option, set by Judge Richard English. Upon his release, he is not to have phone, mail or other personal contact with the victim, the complaint specified.

Bryer is scheduled for an initial court appearance on May 14 at 9 a.m.
