UPDATE: Sandy Hook Bay Drowning Victim Identified

The man who drowned in Sandy Hook Bay on Sunday afternoon while he was out swimming and fishing with friends and family on a boat was identified Monday by NJ State Police as Hector Yandun, 37, of Brooklyn, NY. 

According to State Trooper Ken Minnes at the scene Sunday, police believe Yandun went off the boat into the water to swim, and after a while he sustained a cramp and began to experience difficulty swimming.

“Two other men on the boat — I believe they were family members — saw the victim go under and jumped into the water in an attempt to save him,” Minnes said. “He was brought to the Monmouth Cove Marina where CPR was performed on him, but the victim is now deceased.”

Yandun was brought to Riverview Hospital in Red Bank where he was pronounced dead.

Police received their first call at 4:13 p.m. about a body that had been recovered on a boat and brought into the Monmouth Cove Marina where the Middletown Township police were the first to arrive at the scene, according to New Jersey State Police Lt. Steven Jones. 

Middletown Township First Aid also responded. 

Late Sunday, a small crowd of onlookers sat at the benches and tables at the marina, talking about what had unfolded.

According to the Coast Guard, the body of water off Monmouth Cove is known both as Sandy Hook Bay and Raritan Bay.
