There are more than 400 volunteer firefighters in the Middletown Township Fire Department, which is touted to be the lartest all-volunteer department in the nation.
About 40 of them were on hand to fight yesterday's fire at a home on the corner of Bamm Hollow and Red Hill roads.
No one was at home at the time of the early afternoon incident. No one was hurt, but the structure sustained severe smoke and fire damage, according to fire officials.
It took seven of the department's 11 fire companies to battle the blaze for about two hours. The fire is out and all are well. But Fire Department photographer Laurie Kegley caught some of the action and shared it with Patch.

How about a nice EMS story? We do 10 times the work. Not to discount the fire department as they do a great great job but EMS always seems to get a back seat

Steve, I'd love to do a story on EMS. Send me an email and we'll arrange something. All volunteer emergency workers deserve a lot of credit and recognition. Don't take anything away from your fellow firefighters, either, though.

We had a chimney fire this past Monday night with (I think 3 different fire companies) responding. I think at least 2 first aid squads came too. Huge thanks to all and our neighbors who alerted us and 911!
