UPDATE: Rec Director Silva on Leave

Longtime director continues to collect pay while township administrative probes personnel issues.

Middletown Parks and Recreation programs continue as scheduled even as department Director Gregg Silva remains on administrative leave, according to Assistant Township Administrator James Vannest.

In a telephone interview on Wednesday, Vannest confirmed that the administration placed Silva on leave indefinitely earlier this month. Silva, who continues to be paid, will be out of office until certain personnel issues are resolved, Vannest said.

Vannest declined to discuss those personnel issues, but indicated that programs at the Middletown Arts Center, the township Senior Center and the Tonya Keller Community Center are ongoing.

All of the recreation programs, which, before budget cuts, were administered by about 26 full-time employees and 16 seasonal workers, are being supervised by staff supervisors, he added.

Silva has been the sole administrator in the Parks and Recreation Department since the township committee furloughed nearly all his staff earlier this year as a result of budget cuts to that office.

Both Mayor Anthony Fiore and Deputy Mayor Pamela Brightbill also confirmed yesterday that Silva is on adminstrative leave. Both, however, declined to discuss specific details citing personnel matters.

Fiore and Brightbill have referred all questions regarding Silva to Middletown Township administration.
