Shadow Lake Dredging Contract Is Back Out to Bid

The township is looking for someone to dredge the lake, and cart away the muck, at the right price.

The township is making a second attempt to attract proposals to dredge approximately 150,000 cubic yards of material from the upper portion of Shadow Lake and take it offsite. The work will also include site clearing, construction of a confined disposal field, installation of turbidity barriers, and re-grading and restoration of the project site.

Public notices advertising the project were published on Sept. 19. This is the second time the project is being put out to bid. On August 20, the township turned down all six bids at its government meeting.

"They came in high, and we rejected them," said Mayor Anthony Fiore. The new bids are due November 20.

Contract documents and plans for the proposed work, prepared by Robert R. Keady, P.E., C.M.E., of the firm of T&M Associates, Consulting and Municipal Engineers, of Middletown are on file in the office of the Engineer and may be inspected by prospective bidders during business hours.

Is the rebuilding of the bridge into Stevenson's Park a requirement of the bid? The current bridge will never bear the weight of an empty dump truck. The new request for bids in perfectly timed to the upcoming municipal election. The topic of dredging of Shadow Lake always comes up just before November elections as a means of trying to capture votes. Even if a bid is accepted there is still no site available for the contaminated material.
