Should Businesses Be Open on Labor Day?
Some businesses like TD Bank and Stop&Shop will operate during normal businesses hours on Sept. 3.
For most, Labor Day will mean a day off work, a backyard barbecue, or a final trip with the family down the shore. But for some, Labor day will be business as usual.
TD Bank, Stop & Shop, and ShopRite are just some of the businesses that will open for their regular Monday hours, while countless others will open for just a few hours.
TD Bank describes itself as America's most convenient bank and states that operating under a normal schedule on Labor Day fulfills their promise to customers.
"Unlike most banks that are closed, TD Bank stores will be open normal business hours for all of your banking needs. TD Bank delivers on its promise of having longer hours than any other bank," the release states.
Labor Day is a federal holiday instituted 130 years ago in honor of the working class, according to the Department of Labor website. It was designed to give hard workers, who might not otherwise have time off, a day of their own.

Rather than snipe about a few merchants who choose to be open on the holiday, it would be better to expose the deplorable status of labor itself. Consider the persistent attacks on collective bargaining. The school's janitors, office staff, and substitute teachers weren't protected by labor agreements and are now outsourced with few benefits and poor pay.
Whether a bank teller is getting a day off to go to the beach seems trivial in comparison to the undercutting of labor itself. Truth be told, there's hardly anything to celebrate this Labor Day.

I don't want to sound harsh, but...
Everyone worries about the workers who feel that any holiday is a right and so on. Its almost a crime to work on a holiday.
Some of the policemen, firemen, first aid squads, bus drivers, etc are workers who RARELY or NEVER see a holiday off. Yet when it is contract time, those that enjoy a 'normal' life where they can spend summers at the shore and holidays off treat them like criminals for daring to desire making a living wage. These men and women work when the rest of the working class don't. Everyone wants the 'public worker' to share the pain of the bad economy, then maybe the other workers should have to share the pain of having to work holidays.

This is capitalism. Make money no matter what. Everyone is open on Sunday. Everyone is open on most holidays. Wait until one of the big stores decides that it would be a "good idea" to open up on Christmas so that you can get started on those returns. It's going to happen, just a matter of time.

When I was young, there were few stores open on any holiday, even the local delis.
I notice more and more stores open lately on such holidays as Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving. Like you say, its just a matter of time. It will happen.

Greed.
I work a private sector job in textile manufacturing and importing. I work Memorial day and Labor day every year and every year it irks me more and more. My bosses are not American and have made it clear that American customs and traditions are not an interest of theirs. Funny that America is the land in which their bread is buttered.
There is no sanctity in anything when it involves money.

My son's will have to work on Labor Day because this is hios company's busy season.He knew this when he was hired.But,he gets enough paid time off around Thanksgiving,Christmas and other holidays to make up for it.
