What's Hot at Fort Monmouth? The Bowling Alley, Apparently
Out of all the myriad properties in the mini-city of Fort Monmouth, guess which one has generated the most inquiries?
You guessed it – it’s the 20 lanes at the post bowling alley, according to Real Estate Director David Nuse of the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA).
Apparently Wii bowling hasn’t filled the void left when Memory Lanes in Shrewsbury burned down in 2009. Since then it has been a bowling desert in the Two River area.
Though interest from potential buyers has been high, this property won’t even transfer from the Army to private hands for more than a year. That’s because it’s in phase II of the redevelopment plan. The Army and FMERA are still hammering out an agreement for properties in that phase. Once it’s sold the aging property will be sorely in need of an upgrade.
Readers have told us they have fond memories of birthday parties and leagues at the Fort Monmouth Bowling Center, which has been closed for more than a year now. Tell us, what do you remember about the place?

What a disgrace. How many years did the army know the base was closing! By the time is available it will have lost so much value. Great way to do business.

I understand that the recalcitrant actions of the Volvo dealership on Newman Springs Road is why Shrewsbury does not have a new bowling alley. If this is the case, shame on the Volvo dealership. Memory Lanes was an important part of the community fabric: not only for Shrewsbury but also surrounding communities.

Volvo apparently owned the small lot behind the bowling alley..I thought the whole property was owned by the Bowling Alley..I am not sure of exact details..The question is all about Zoning laws etc..Sounds like property isn't big enough to rebuild due to zoning ordinances etc...Sad
