The Kwik Farms convenience store in the Tinton Falls Lukoil sold a winning Mega Millions ticket.
Tom Schweers woke up thinking he struck it big--$95 million big. Every day, the 64-year-old West Long Branch man buys an instant ticket and occasionally springs for a Mega Millions ticket at the Kwik Farms in the Lukoil station on Shrewsbury Avenue on Tinton Falls. The store sold one of the two winning $95 million Mega Millions tickets in the country, the New Jersey Lottery announced Sunday morning. When Schweers heard his local lottery dealer was the winning ticket seller, he thought he could be holding the winning ticket. And then he realized he bought Powerball instead of Mega Millions. “Of course, I probably would have won the damn thing. When I heard the news, I said ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’” Schweers said. Schweers stopped by …

Estimated 400,000 people expected in region; team practices to be held in Florham Park and Media Day in Newark
The 2014 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium is expected to have a $550 million economic impact on New Jersey and New York, with an estimated 400,000 people in the region, according to a report on dailyrecord.com. Businesses should start preparing for the flood of visitors now, according to speakers at The Big Game Huddle, an informational and networking event held Wednesday at Raritan Valley Country Club. “Start the celebration now,” said Wayne Hasenbalg, president and chief executive officer of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. “You don’t have to wait until the week before the game," he told the dailyrecord.com. That impact will be felt in North and Central Jersey, as one of the competing teams will practice at the Atlantic …

A member of the Township Committee says yes, and wants the township to take a second look at its local law governing signs.
Middletown Township Committeeman Tony Fiore says the scrolling, flashing, illuminated messages on electronic display boards popping up around town can potentially be a "massive distraction" to drivers, and the township may need to stop and re-envision its sign ordinance. At a government meeting Monday night, Fiore asked the township administrator to work with township attorney and planning department to look into the traffic safety issues as they relate to digital announcement boards. He said he does not oppose them, but he does have concerns about their attention-grabbing graphics. "I do believe this governing body, for safety issues, has to look and examine with respect to how often those signs should be able to change," Fiore said. "…

Whole Foods of Middletown held a festive little wedding showcase to show off the floral and pastry department and give people a reason to sip Prosecco in the produce section.
In an effort to remind their customers that the Whole Foods Market lifestyle has a place at the table -- even on a wedding day -- the Middletown supermarket cleared away some space in the store Thursday and put on a small evening wedding expo. A deejay wearing a calla lily in his lapel played wedding music, surrounded by Jewel yams and purple potatoes -- proving he's not easily intimidated by a tough crowd. Nearby, an elegant bartender poured wine under a canopy of fair trade bananas. Shoppers waiting at the express check-out were treated to "La Vie En Rose" by a violinist and a flutist, who struggled to compete with the chatty crowd crowded into the store's eat-in area to meet professionals like an old-fashioned hand calligrapher, …

Developers competed in a 24-hour hackathon, creating applications to support businesses impacted by Sandy.
Tech talents from across the state pulled an all-nighter in Asbury Park last weekend, contributing code to help restore the Shore. The Jersey Shore Comeback-A-Thon, a 24-hour hackathon sponsored by Marathon Data Systems of Wall, challenged developers to create an application to benefit the local business community in the first summer following Superstorm Sandy. “There’s nothing like coding for a good cause,” said Cory Cardio, a Long Branch resident who teamed up with Margaret Kim of Fort Lee and Gary Kagan of Sebastain, Fla. under the moniker “Team Mango.” The trio’s crowd-sourced application allowing community members to give and receive up-to-the-minute location-based information was selected as the hackathon winner. Cardio, Kim and …
