Christie's Mobile Cabinet Comes to Aberdeen Thursday

The mobile cabinet features officials from various State agencies on hand to answer questions.

The Christie Administration's Mobile Cabinet tour through shore communities affected by Hurricane Sandy continues with a stop in Aberdeen on Thursday, May 23. Gov. Chris Christie instituted mobile cabinets in an effort to pair head officials from several State and federal agencies with local residents impacted by the late October storm who are looking for answers as they continue to recover.  The Mobile Cabinet will be held at the township municipal building off of Church Street from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Residents will have an opportunity to meet with officials from the Department of Banking and Insurance, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Community Affairs, the Business Action Center, FEMA, and the National Flood …

Home Buyouts in Flood Zones to Begin Soon

Home buyouts in areas prone to flooding expected to start soon, though participation remains voluntary.

Buyouts of properties in flood prone areas are expected to begin within a matter of weeks, beginning in Middlesex County and working south into the summer months as residents and their respective town officials make the difficult decision to abandon entire neighborhoods for good. Though buyout specifics have been limited, Bob Martin, commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection, said between eight and 10 towns along the coast have inquired about participating in the State’s Blue Acres program, which purchases severe repetitive-loss homes in flood areas and converts the land into open space. Martin said he wanted to be cautious about naming the municipalities that have inquired about the property buyouts as many have …

Database Provides Information on 31,000 Flood and Salvage-Titled Vehicles

The state urges customers to consult the database before buying a car

The State Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) are urging all customers to consult their database of flood and salvage-titled vehicles before purchasing a car. That database now provides information on 31,000 such vehicles, the State MVC announced on Wednesday. It isn't illegal to sell vehicles with flood or salvaged titles. However, there are specific requirements that ensure potential purchasers are aware of the status of such vehicles, according to the MVC. “Damage sustained by vehicles must be disclosed to prospective buyers,” Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said. “We will hold car dealers accountable for violating our Consumer Fraud Act if they fail to make such disclosures.” The database was …

Could someone explain what this report is all about? Who authored it? Who paid for it? When was it written? And does it really apply to the question of today's police departmental behavior? And why is it a secret anyway?   more ›

Are Electronic Message Boards Distracting to Drivers?

A member of the Township Committee says yes, and wants the township to take a second look at its local law governing signs.

Middletown Township Committeeman Tony Fiore says the scrolling, flashing, illuminated messages on electronic display boards popping up around town can potentially be a "massive distraction" to drivers, and the township may need to stop and re-envision its sign ordinance.  At a government meeting Monday night, Fiore asked the township administrator to work with township attorney and planning department to look into the traffic safety issues as they relate to digital announcement boards. He said he does not oppose them, but he does have concerns about their attention-grabbing graphics.  "I do believe this governing body, for safety issues, has to look and examine with respect to how often those signs should be able to change," Fiore said. "…

They should issue summons to every person who's name, website or phone number appears on those signs. One summons per sign per day or view by an officer. The town would make a fortune. After Sandy, there was one company selling home back up generators that put 4 signs (each sign was continued on the next) at every intersection around here. Buy a Billboard! I would never sell my house to one of …   more ›

Library Closes on Summer Sundays, Including June

The library is normally closed on Sundays in July and August, but now it will close on Sundays in June too following a board decision.

In another attempt to cut expenses in a year three branches were closed, the Middletown Township Library Board of Trustees has decided to close the main branch on summer Sundays between Memorial Day through Labor Day.  Normally the library closes Sundays in July and August. But after considering how some recent personnel changes could potentially save money, the trustees decided in April it was still prudent to stay closed from Memorial Day through Labor Day to save about $5,000. At a special meeting held Tuesday night, a motion was made to rescind the decision made at the April meeting, but it failed.  Board members Davic Siwiec, Michael Vitkansas, Lawrence Nelson, Cynthia Wilson and Vivian Breen voted against the motion; Board President …

Where do Middletown's taxes stand in comparison with the rest of the towns in the County? Seems to me that the last few budgets had very small tax increases despite two straight years with hurricanes. Or are you going to talk about the MAC costing so much again, despite the fact that you apparently like the MAC?   more ›

Christie: Weight Loss Surgery 'Intensely Personal Issue'

Governor chides reporters for obsessing about 'silly,' 'shallow' subject, says he is not a role model

Gov. Chris Christie reluctantly fielded reporters’ questions Tuesday about his February Lap-Band surgery, but said he would not be providing the public with any news as he heads towards his weight-loss goal, which he pointedly refused to disclose. "This is it. You ask me any more questions about this, I’m not answering,” Christie said during a groundbreaking ceremony at a Newark vocational high school. "I’m not going to be giving you all updates as this goes along. ... I’m not giving people a day-by-day, week-by-week, blow by blow," he said, adding, "I don’t care to be a role model for anyone. This is an intensely personal issue." The governor told the New York Post Monday night he’d had Lap-Band surgery in February because of concerns …

Christie Underwent Weight Loss Surgery In February

Governor tells New York Post that Lap-Band procedure was done at the urging of his family. An NYU doctor made house calls to Christie's Mendham home to not draw attention to the surgery.

Gov. Chris Christie underwent stomach-shrinking Lap-Band surgery in February, he confirmed to the New York Post on Monday night while refuting speculation that he was slimming down for a White House run in 2016. Christie quietly had the Lap-Band — or laparoscopic adjustable gastric binding —procedure done in a New York hospital, telling the paper that he agreed to the surgery at the urging of his family after turning 50 in September. Sean Conner, a spokesperson for Christie, confirmed the story to Patch Tuesday. The governor insisted that the Lap-Band was not inserted to help him lose weight in the run-up to 2016. "I know it sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary …

Report: Net Property Tax Increase Much Higher Under Christie Than Corzine

Christie rebate cuts cause 22.4 percent increase in net property taxes that hits those making under $150,000

Net property taxes in New Jersey rose 22.4 percent in Gov. Chris Christie's first three years in office, compared to just 6 percent in Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine's last three years in office, a New Jersey Spotlight analysis shows. Christie, who has made attacks on “Corzine Democrats” a centerpiece of his reelection campaign, has been touting his record of holding down overall property tax increases. But when Christie’s rebate reductions are factored in, his property tax record is not so clear-cut. While Corzine doubled average property tax rebates from 2006 to 2009 and provided rebates to families earning as much as $250,000, Christie sharply cut the size of rebate payments and limited eligibility for non-seniors to those earning $75,000 …

I don't vote Republican and I'm not sure about Christie. But here's a fact; Jon Corzine is a lowlife scumbag thief. Whatever Christie does, he hasn't stolen money from over 38k people and destroyed a company that has been around for over 100 years. My disclaimer is that I was an MF Global customer who was robbed by Jon Corzine. Regardless, I'm not saying vote Rep or Dem, what I'm saying is this …   more ›

Parkway Exit 105 Reconfiguration Will Begin by End of Summer

New Jersey Turnpike Authority slightly alters design

The Garden State Parkway Exit 105 reconfiguration project will begin by the "end of summer," according to New Jersey Turnpike Authority Spokesman Thomas Feeney. The project will also feature one change in response to local concerns. A left-turn lane and traffic signal will be added at the intersection of Wayside Road and Pinebrook Road. This is being done to help ease traffic concerns from the increased amount of people expected to use Wayside Road. The $40 million project will completed in two contracts. The first contract will include the reconstruction of Exit 105 at the intersection of Hope Road and Route 36. The main improvement at the Hope Road intersection will include a new ramp from the Parkway North exit that would run between a …
