Middletown native James van Riemsdyk has earned a spot on this year's U.S. Olympic hockey team.
Now a member of the NHL Toronto Maple Leafs squad, van Riemsdyk's selection to play in the Sochi Games was announced after the league's Winter Classic outdoor match in Ann Arbor, Mich. played on Wednesday, according to ESPN.
"Couldn't be more honored and excited to represent my country in Sochi and be a part of this team," van Riemsdyk wrote on his Twitter feed. "Gonna be a dream come true!! #merica."
Van Riemsdyk, 24, made his NHL debut with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2009. He played for Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft before transferring at age 16 to Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor to play hockey, according to the NHL.
