Historical Renovation on Red Hill Road Nears Completion

Monmouth County builder and remodeler Logan Construction is almost finished with the historical restoration of 2 Red Hill Road in Middletown. The home will come on the market at the end of Spring.

Built in 1684, the home is touted as one of "Middletown's Original Homes," as stated on an antique bronze plaque which will go back into the house at completion," according to the current property owner Gerard Logan, who also owns Logan Construction.

The home was also known as the Wilson-Bowne house and later as the "Rising Sun Hostelry" from 1808-1858, as stated on the same plaque.

Over its long history, according to Mr. Logan, "the house served as a farm, a hostel, a brothel, a tavern, a site that held county elections, and possibly a place where George Washington and his troops slept."

It had an original slave quarters and hand-hewn beams that were labeled with Roman numerals to show which tenon went into what mortise ... very different from the way we build today, says Mr. Logan.

Logan Construction restored the home to its original charm while adding modern conveniences and luxuries. The crew changed the orientation of the front door and created a gorgeous porch.

The history of the house was respected and Logan Construction preserved its integrity, which is important in any restoration project. For example, the carpenters saved the original pumpkin pine floors, which are extremely rare now, stored them and re-installed them with most of the original nails.

The home has four fireplaces that were restored to working order. There is an original 1684 fireplace with a crane for cooking. It is seven feet wide and five feet tall. Logan spray-foamed the walls, to not only make the home "green," but more importantly to be extremely energy efficient.

The crew pulled original bricks from exterior walls and re-used them for accent walls in the interior. Everywhere Logan Construction cleaned up and excavated the property, it found oyster shells...they must have liked oysters a lot back then.

This gem is now fully restored and renovated. It is recognized by the Historical Society as a historical renovation. There now is an open concept main living area, complete with a huge eat-in kitchen, living room, dining room and family room. There are four large bedrooms and 2.5 baths. There are two detached garages that holds two cars each with a walk-up loft.
