Local quilt store runs pillowcase drive for hospitalized children

Abby’s Quilting Corner, a local quilting and sewing store in Middletown, has joined an international pillowcase drive for children hospitalized for cancer treatment.

The local drive began the last weekend in March when quilt shop owner Donna Painter invited customers to choose colorfully patterned fabric, creating a cheerful pillowcase for a child.  Patterns and instructions were provided with customers providing their own sewing machines and necessary materials.
The drive is under the international organization ConKerr Cancer.
The response from customers was immediate and strong, which led Painter to extend the drive throughout the month until the end of April. More than 45 cases had been completed by the first week in April.

Abby’s opened just a year ago in the WOW Shopping Center on Route 35 Middletown and offers a full range of sewing fabrics and items.

There is an active quilting program, where beginning to experienced quilters have an opportunity to hone their craft under the guidance and instruction of an experienced and award-winning quilter.
Painter also gives private instruction and has classes for children. Open sewing is available several times each week, a modern interpretation of the quilting circle. Current class projects include Quilt Block of the Month, Irish Chain quilts, Sewing Totes; and scheduled for May, the Sunshine and Shadows quilt class.
