Donnie Coates, is a Patrolman with the Middletown Township Police Department. This year over 4 days, from May 9-12, 2014, he will once again be riding a bicycle over 300 miles from New Jersey to Washington, DC as part of The Police Unity Tour.

This bike ride is a not just a fundraiser. It is an event that raises awareness for the police officers who have died in the line of duty- the ones that selflessly gave their lives to protect the lives of others- the fallen heroes that went to work one day and never made it home. In 2013 alone, there were 97 of these fallen heroes. On average, that is one hero every three days.

As a member of the Tour, he will be raising money for the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial Fund. In 2013, the riders of the Police Unity Tour were able to donate over 1.72 million dollars to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, bringing our total donations to nearly 14 Million Dollars.

Our motto is - "We Ride For Those Who Died". We ride to honor those officers who have come before us and have paid the ultimate sacrifice. These officers, whose names grace the walls of the memorial in Washington, D.C., have left behind mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, wives, husbands, children, co-workers and friends.

Patrolman Steve Greenwood  of the Middletown Township Police Department will also be peddling along with Donnie.  They are supported by their Number 1 support guy Sargent Sean Sweeney , also a Member of the MTPD.

There are over hunderds of Police officers, past and present who participate in the ride...so lets not forget them.....and say thank you for putting their lives on the line to keep our family's safe.

Once again Middletown Twp. Police Officers will be participating in the Police Unity Tour. The Police Unity Tour is a bicycle ride from New Jersey to the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. This is done in May during Police Week, in memory of police officers who died in the line of duty and to raise funds for the Law Enforcement Memorial. The Police Unity Tour started in 1997 in Florham Park. That year, 18 police officers made the trip and raised $18,000. In 2013, more than 1400 police officers made the trip and raised $1.6 million. Police from throughout the country now participate and officers from Italy, England and Israel have also participated. Middletown Twp. Officers, as well as several other Police Departments from the Bayshore area, Holmdel, Union Beach, Hazlet and Red Bank, have been a part of the Police Unity Tour since 2006 and are proud to be involved with the Tour and have helped with the important roles in the tour. This year on May 9, three Middletown Twp. Police Officers will make the trip from East Hanover to Washington D.C. These Officers, Sgt. Sean Sweeney, Patrolmen Donald Coates and Steve Greenwood each must raise $1,700 to participate and donations are being requested.
