School Bond Referendum

The Middletown Board of Education is asking residents to approve a $19.4M bond referendum on March 11, 2014 in order to save Middletown taxpayers $12.9M in critical repairs to our schools.

Middletown schools require $32.3M in repairs which includes replacement of roofs on 15 of the 17 schools and repairs to the HVAC systems at 5 schools.  We have a rare opportunity to capture up to $12.9M, or 40% of the costs of these repairs through Regular Operating District (ROD) grants approved by the NJ Department of Education.  These grants are contingent upon the Board of Education securing financing for the remaining 60% (i.e. $19.4M).  If the Board of Education is unable to secure its 60% share, it will lose the $12.9M in grants and that money will go to another district but the need for the work will not go away and the ultimate cost to Middletown taxpayers will far exceed the $32.3M.

Middletown residents will have the opportunity to vote on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 between 4:00pm and 9:00pm.  The referendum can pass or fail by a single vote.  It is important that you get out and support our schools and our children.
