Mysterious Middletown Sightings Tour

This week's Mysterious Middletown Sightings Tour takes you to a place where a bit of war history is preserved on a great lawn with township ties.

There are two World War II era cannons perched on either side of a peanut stone memorial to vets of the war.

We can tell you this much: There was a time, about a decade ago, when the memorial found its final resting place is the spot depicted in the photos. Where is it?

It had been located in another place previoulsy; and, after a subdivision was granted on the site, the memorial was broken to bits by construction crews on the site.

There had been a provision, asked for by the that was a condition of the Planning Board's subdivision approval — the memorial was to be relocated before ground was broken.

That provision was not adhered to and the memorial was "smashed to bits," Landmarks Commission Chairwoman MaryLou Strong had said.
