Original Story May 13

A sewer line project along a busy road in Navesink could cause road closures and detours between mid-May and the end of summer.

The new sanitary line is being installed in Middletown from the corner of Route 36 and Navesink Avenue then along Navesink & Monmouth Avenues to Sears Avenue. It replaces an existing sanitary sewer line that runs along Route 36 and has had several leaks in recent years.

This work is being done by Mount Construction for the Atlantic Highlands-Highlands Regional Sewerage Authority (AHHRSA)

According to the Authority, passage for emergency vehicles, school buses and local traffic will be maintained at all times but delays could occur. They advise motorists to be ready to take alternate routes if possible.

The underground pipe will go along Navesink & Monmouth Avenues and end on Sears Avenue near its corner with Monmouth Avenue (see map) where it will connect with the existing Township of Middletown Sewerage Authority (TOMSA) collection lines that run under Sears Avenue and then continue on to the Belford treatment plant, the authority says.

Under the NJDEP Wastewater Management Plan, the TOMSA sewerage treatment system has served the three municipalities since 1986; this line will replace the damaged sewerage line that serves Highlands and a part of Middletown.

Construction will start in mid-May and is expected to be completed before the end of summer; work hours will be from 7 - 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Work will begin at Route 36 and progress down Navesink and Monmouth Avenues to Sears Avenue (work in the school area will not begin until after school closes in June).

The areas excavated each day will be closed and repaved by the end of that day, said the authority's administrator, Dave Palamara. A final roadway milling and repaving will be done about three months after completion of the work after the ground settles.

The work will generally be in the right lane when going from Route 36 and down Navesink and Monmouth Avenues to Sears Avenue.
