No Limits: Art Exhibit Shows 'Pure Expression'

Paintings by talented artists with disabilities featured at the Monmouth Museum

It's all for art's sake of "pure expression."

The Arts Access Program of the Matheny Medical and Educational Center, Peapack, is displaying paintings created by its artists with disabilities in an exhibit named for its intent —  “Pure Expression.”

The exhibit will run from Feb. 12 to Mar. 18 at the Monmouth Museum, on the Brookdale Community College campus in the Lincroft section of Middletown, with a free reception on opening day from 3 to 5 p.m. The reception is open to the public.

Founded at Matheny in 1993, this alternative fine arts program offers opportunities for unlimited self-expression in the arts. Matheny is a special hospital and educational facility for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities.

The artistic process is an undeniable source of empowerment for people with disabilities. Through the use of Arts Access’ specialized communication and choice systems, the artists are able to follow their creative passions, and are encouraged to build upon their instincts and inner strength.

Arts Access artists no longer feel defined by their disabilities, but rather define themselves by their achievements.

The Arts Access Program at the Matheny Medical and Educational Center offers programs in painting, digital art, sculpture, drama, writing, dance, and choreography.
