Wonderful turn of the century snapshots of the hordes at the Jersey shore, in their buttoned up sunbathing suits holding black umbrellas, are now available for all to peruse, thanks to the efforts of the Monmouth County Historical Association and its volunteers.
Librarian Laura M. Poll has posted photos of the masses enjoying a salt water dip in Keansburg, Atlantic Highlands, Highlands, Sea Bright, Ocean Grove, Asbury Park, Deal Lake and Manasquan. The postcards were recently digitized from a collection of hundreds of Monmouth County postcards.
There are scenes of vacation retreats in the form of Ocean Avenue mansions, charming bungalows and billowing, shady tents on the beach. The people captured in these scenes appear unhurried, relaxed and grateful for the cool escape, in an age we hardly remember before air conditioning and ice cubes.
Poll invites Patch readers to take a look and offer any special information about the scenes. "I'd especially like to know if anyone can identify people in the postcards," she said.
