Brookdale Awarded Largest Ever National Science Foundation ATE Project Grant in New Jersey

Grant Awarded to Brookdale Community College allows development of interactive e-books and mobile apps.

Brookdale Community College has been awarded the largest ever National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Project Grant in the state.

The goal of this $899,360 project, E-MATE, E-books and Mobile Apps for Technician Education (DUE 120513), is to create and disseminate a generic, reusable framework for the development of e-books and mobile applications that promote teaching and learning.  The project is funded for three years.

“Initially, the team will work with content providers from several technical disciplines to develop interactive e-books and mobile apps. The lessons learned throughout this process will be used to establish a framework to enable faculty members in other disciplines and institutions to create their own e-books and mobile apps,” says Professor Mike Qaissaunee, Department Chair, Engineering and Technology, and E-MATE Principal Investigator (PI).

This award marks the second time Brookdale has received funding for a proposal submitted by Professor Qaissaunee.  In 2003, Brookdale was awarded $604,848 for Professor Qaissaunee to found the Mid-Atlantic Institute for Telecommunications Technologies (MAITT), which developed and implemented several new courses related to wireless communications.

Brookdale is one of three of New Jersey’s 19 community colleges to receive NSF ATE funding twice in the program’s 19 year history and one of six to ever receive NSF ATE funding.  The E-MATE project is one of approximately 75 out of 253 proposals that were awarded funding, putting Brookdale in a select group nationwide.   Since ATE program inception, only 17 awards have been funded in New Jersey.
