Where the Jobs Are

More than 50 individuals interested in the healthcare field visited the Brookdale Community College Freehold campus Tuesday to learn about training programs in medical coding, dental and medical assisting, ultrasound and more as part of Healthcare Info Day.

“People realize that in the current market, they need to get new training,” said Dr. Padma Arvind, director of the New Jersey Health Care Talent Network, which co-sponsored the event with Brookdale. “They are starting to get the message that in healthcare there is a demand for trained individuals.”

“The purpose of today is to really promote health care training programs, resources and careers in health care,” said Anne LaPorta, job developer at the college.

Among the visitors was Manalapan High School junior Stacey Gross.  “My wife and I thought it would be a good idea to get her exposed to the opportunities in the healthcare field,” her dad said. Jennifer Barton of Bradley Beach came looking for continuing educational opportunities that would enhance her current career in medical coding. Sarah Zhu of Morganville was interested in a training program that would combine her existing technology background with healthcare. Wulin Fu of Freehold, baby in tow, came looking for information on Brookdale’s programs in nursing and dental hygiene.

On hand was Lawrence Sternbach, business representative for the Monmouth County Division of Workforce Development, who noted that funding is often available for these kinds of programs.

“If it’s short term career training program, we can fund that if the people qualify,” he said.

In addition to the Brookdale booths, representatives from Rite Aid Pharmacy handed out mugs, laundry bags, and Frisbees along with information about jobs opportunities. Preferred Home Health Care and Nursing Services talked to visitors about home health care jobs, and faculty from the Institute for Therapeutic Massage, Tinton Falls, provided information on careers and training in massage therapy.
