Bites Nearby: Kaya's Kitchen

Organic Vegan Cuisine done right at Belmar Restaurant and Cafe

While I am not a vegetarian, I have a great appreciation for vegetarian and vegan cuisine. I have been going to Kaya's Kitchen in Belmar for years, back when it was on 8th Avenue.

They have since moved to the corner of 10th and Main, after they expanded their restaurant space. I have gone there with vegans and even dragged some meat lovers who left full, happy, and with plenty of leftovers.

Kaya's  has an extensive menu and a wide variety of international cuisine, from American to Asian, Greek, Turkish, Indian, Mexican, and so on.  They serve no meat whatsoever, but they do have dairy cheese for real cheese lovers like myself.  I often still stick to a lot of my favorites; but now with a longer menu, I've been trying to have something new each time I go. It's BYOB, so we usually bring a bottle of wine or a good six-pack.

For appetizers, the Kaya's Combo has always been my favorite, with their "country nuggets", breaded tofu fried and served for dipping with their amazing  tangy BBQ sauce. Their karma wings have a strong buffalo spice with cucumber ranch ranch dipping sauce, Mississippi "ribs" and their Picnic Potato salad.

As I love both the BBQ sauce and the cucumber ranch, I have also often ordered the BBQ Tower of marinated in BBQ, grilled and stacked with lettuce, tomato, drizzled with cucumber anch and served on a multigrain roll. I used to also order it as a wrap.

Kaya's also has a great hummus plate, tabouli, babaganouj, a variety of veggie burgers, sandwiches, soups (notably the Green Goddess, creamy broccoli and spinach soup), salads, and an extensive dinner menu to suit any palatte. I have had the Tofu Teriyaki, with bell peppers, onions, broccoli, bamboo shoot, and tofu sauteed in a sweet ginger teriyaki sauce and served over brown rice.

They also have Pineapple Curry, Rocky Mountain Stew, Jamabalya, Pierogies, Enchiladas, and I could go on forever. They also have a pizza menu, juice bar, and a wide variety of delicious vegan desserts (that even dairy lovers like ... I promise!) Is your mouth watering yet? Mine is. I think I will probably try to go there this weekend.

Kaya's seasonally has a Sunday Breakfast as well. As it is in season, I suggest you go one Sunday after an action packed weekend.
