Long Branch, NJ – Today, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) announced a $3,649,907 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to repair damage sustained to the Asbury Park Boardwalk as a result of Superstorm Sandy. The grant will cover 90% of the cost of the project. An estimated 66,000 square feet of the boardwalk was damaged during last October’s storm.
“I believe the best way to mark the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy is by recognizing New Jersey’s resilience and efforts to rebuild, and this grant for the historic Asbury Park Boardwalk does just that,” said Pallone. “The reconstruction of Asbury Park’s Boardwalk was critical to the city’s full recovery, and I’m pleased residents and tourists can enjoy the boardwalk again once thanks to this reconstruction effort.”
After the storm, Asbury Park demolished some parts of the boardwalk and stabilized others until permanent repairs could be made. A contract was awarded to GCS Contractors Corp. to reconstruct 24,000 square feet of the boardwalk with aid from city employees and equipment.
The grant announced today will cover the costs incurred for repairing the remaining 42,000 square feet of the boardwalk including new decking and the demolition and removal of an estimated 210 tons of damaged decking. The work required the excavation and disposal of more than one ton of unsuitable soil of and the re-grading of more than 4,670 square yards of ground to support the new boardwalk.

The grant also covers the cost of two new beach access points will be built with ramps and stairs as well as the installation of conduits, an electrical cabinet, 620 feet steel railings and nine new waterfront decorative street lights.
