NJ DOT: Major Rt. 35 Improvements Coming to Aberdeen/Old Bridge

The project also includes safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) plans to begin a safety improvement and congestion relief project along a 1.25 mile stretch of Route 35 near the Aberdeen and Old Bridge border, according to a press release from the agency.

The section of Route 35 between Greenwood Avenue and Prospect Avenue, NJDOT said, experiences regular flooding due to its proximity to Long Neck Creek and Whale Creek.

The $15.7 million project will raise the level of Route 35 by as much as four feet, with the highest increases in elevation at the culverts of each creek. Culverts are open drains that allow water to flow under a roadway. The project also includes replacing the drainage pipes with larger culverts to minimize tidal flooding.

At the same time, NJDOT plans to rehabilitate and widen the road.

NJDOT will also modify the intersections at Birchwood Drive, County Road, Cliffwood Avenue and Amboy Avenue to improve traffic flow. Safety for pedestrians and bicyclists will be taken into account and new sidewalks, crosswalks and ramps will be installed at various locations within the project, according to the release.

NJDOT's contractor, Green Construction, is expected to begin preliminary construction activity this weekend and utility relocation work is expected to start in April. After that, the construction work will begin.

According to NJDOT, work in the creeks is restricted due to environmental reasons until July 1.

During construction, all available travel lanes will remain open but shoulders will be closed with traffic shifts. The majority of the work will be completed overnight, according to NJDOT.

The project is scheduled for completion by Fall 2015.
