“Amazing Grace” is an adaptation by Shay Youngblood from the book by Mary Hoffman. The story follows Grace, a girl who loved stories. Empowered by the strength of her imagination and the love of her mother and Nana, this dramatic, creative girl constantly adopts roles and identities such as: Joan of Arc, Anansi the Spider, Hiawatha, Mowgli and many more.
When her class plans a presentation of “Peter Pan,” “Grace knew who she wanted to be. She holds fast despite her classmates’ demurrals that she can’t be Peter Pan because she is a girl and because she is black. In the end, Grace shows that she can indeed do anything she sets her mind to.
