Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen
Scholarship Contest



VFW Post 2179 and Ladies Auxiliary is again
conducting two worthy scholarship programs that will help students build up
their college fund or professional school fund.























Voice of Democracy (V.O.D.)                                                                                                    
      
This program that was established in 1947, to
promote patriotism and writing.  It is an
oral essay contest, open to students in grade 9 – 12, who go to public, parochial,
or private schools or are home schooled, in which the student writes his/her
essay and then records it on an Audio CD or standard cassette tape.  This recording may not be less than three
minutes and a maximum of five minutes.
All entries must be in by midnight November 1, 2013

Of important note is Charles
Kuralt, American journalist and reporter was a winner at the age of 14 in
1948.  He stated this gave him confidence
to do what he wanted.



This years’ theme is:  WHY I’M
OPTIMISTIC ABOUT OUR NATION’S FUTURE

JUDGING
CRITERIA:


Originality is worth 30 points: Treatment of the theme should show imagination
and human interest.   Content is
worth 35 points: Clearly express your ideas in an organized manner. Fully
develop your theme and use transitions to move smoothly from one idea to the
other. Delivery is worth 35 points: Speak in a clear and credible
manner.





Patriot’s Pen



Patriot’s Pen is
a newer scholarship contest that the VFW established to include students in
grade 6-8.  The student is to type an
essay of not less than 300 words and no longer than 400 words based on the
theme.  Due by midnight November 1, 2013
to VFW Post 2179



This years’
theme is:  WHAT PATRIOTISM MEANS TO ME



JUDGING CRITERIA: Knowledge of the theme is worth 30
points: You must show a thorough knowledge of the theme in your work. Demonstrate you have researched the
issue extensively.  Theme development
is worth 35 points: Answer all relevant facts about the theme such as the who,
what, where, when and why. Relate the theme to your own experiences.  Clarity of ideas is worth 35 points:
Write your essay in an easy-to-understand format. Leave your reader with a
clear understanding of your explanation of the theme.
