With a Field of Flags, Middletown Church Honors Veterans

Veterans Day program will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9

Each of the 6,300 American flags on the front lawn of the Westminster Presbyterian Church holds a special meaning.

They're a dedication to the lives of Servicemembers lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. This year, in honor of Veterans Day, the church is honoring those who served in the recent Middle East conflicts.

A Service of Remembrance honoring those who made sacrifices for their country will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the 94 Tindall Rd. church.

"This Veterans Day weekend we are hoping to bring out as many members of the community as possible to be a part of this patriotic and emotional service," said Rick Holbert, a church elder. "This is the second year we have done this and have found it helps with the healing process for families affected and promotes pride in these heroes who gave their lives for us."

Several speakers are scheduled to deliver remarks focusing on the struggles soldiers and their families face, both in wartime and after returning home from a conflict.

A key note address will be given by Marine Major John F. Campbell, the Commanding Officer of Recruiting Station New Jersey. He is a wounded veteran who served two tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Retired Army Sgt. Scott Young, who served in both Kosovo and Iraq, will speak about post traumatic stress and how difficult it can be to deal with this "unseen wound."

Sgt. Major Gregory Vascimini, a retired Marine and veteran of the Gulf War and multiple deployments in Afghanistan, will speak about the stresses that military families face while a loved one is deployed in a dangerous situation.

Opening remarks will be provided by Mayor Gerard Scharfenberger.

New Jersey's Gold Star Families, those who have lost loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan, will be recognized.

"All are welcome to come and honor those that have given so much of themselves and their lives for the United States and the people of the world," Holbert said.

A reception in Harlan Hall will follow the events.
