Debate Tournament March 16 Hosted by Mother Teresa Regional

Mother Teresa Regional School will host the Garden State Debate League on Saturday, March 16th from 9am until 4pm.

Mother Teresa Regional School will be hosting a debate tournament on Saturday, March 16th for the Garden State Debate League from 9am until 4pm.  The league consists of teams from Barkalow Middle School, Freehold, Bolger Middle School, Keansburg, Mother Teresa Regional School, Atlantic Highlands, Our Lady of Sorrows, Hamilton, and Stone Bridge Middle School, Allentown. The league is in its second year and is sponsored by the English Speaking Union.

Students in teams of three will compete with one another debating a range of topics.  The topics this tournament include; NJ drivers should be able to pump their own gas, Video games cause more harm than good, students should not have to pay to participate in extra-curricular activities, the US should guarantee a free college education to all citizens, and the Olympic Games do more good than harm. The students must prepare research for both sides of the topic for the debate and are not told until 20 minutes before each debate which side they will argue.

“We are very excited to be able to host the tournament again” explained Grace Molloy, an 8th grader at Mother Teresa Regional School. “When we hosted last year many of our friends and family were able to come and watch.”  The tournament is open to all members of the public who would like to observe the debate.  Schools who are interested in starting a debate team are also invited to come and learn more about the league.
