Science is for the Stars at Mother Teresa Regional School

Students at Mother Teresa Regional School shine like stars when it comes to science. The school was honored with Third Place and an Honorable Mention at the STARS Challenge.

At Mother Teresa Regional School, students continually reach for the stars.  Students in grades 4-8 participated this week in the annual science fair. In addition to participating in the school’s science fair, students also participated in the STARS Challenge at Monmouth University.  Two teams were recognized for their projects.  Eighth graders, Shane Dolan, Jakob Trinidad, Michael Rosa, Steven Allegretta, Kevin Finucan and Jason Korloff won third place receiving a $600 prize for the school’s science program.  Students in the first trimester science elective, Christina Amato, Kaitlin Flanagan, Bryanna Harvie, Kevin Connelly, Sam Rivera, Nicholas Zajac and Lexi D’Alessio won honorable mention.  In addition, students also created projects for the annual science fair.

Students in grades 4-8 participated in the science fair project which is one of the best learning experiences a student can undertake.  Students chose a scientific question that he or she wanted to answer. For example: How can we prevent noise pollution in our classrooms to help our students become more focused? Is it possible to distill saltwater and make it safe to drink? Out of three different types of helmets, which helmet will protect your skull the best upon impact?  Students researched their topics, formulated their hypothesis and then conducted their experiments. Students presented their findings to the class and then displayed their projects at the Parent Teacher Association Meeting.

Faculty members judged the science fair and in the middle school category, Shane Dolan won first prize, Olivia Micalizzi won second and Dana McCulloch won third.  In grades four and five, Maria Bonnier won first, Page Smith won second and Michael Folk won third. Also recognized for their projects were Meghan Craig, Erin Craig, Nicholas Zajac, Michael Rosa, Tristan Moran and Larry Gearl.

“The science fair project such a great learning experience because it involves so much more than Science. It is an excellent example of active learning. Our students in the middle school and in grades 4th and 5th enjoyed conducting these experiments and enjoyed sharing them with fellow students. I especially enjoy seeing the results.” noted principal Melissa Whelan Wisk.  “Our students do a wonderful job under the direction of Mrs. Jennifer Baeder and our standing at the STARS challenge is a testament to our science program.”

Mother Teresa Regional School is a preschool through eighth grade Catholic school serving students in the Bayshore. For more information on the science fair projects and to see the results of the science fair, visit mtregional.com.
