Expect Delays on Newman Springs Road

Bridge project enters second phase with new traffic patterns.

By Elaine Van Develde

New traffic patterns on the Newman Springs Road (County Route 520) section in Red Bank will start to form, marking the second phase of the Monmouth County project to replace the bridge decks over the Swimming River and prompting county officials to advise drivers to plan alternate routes because of anticipated traffic tie-ups.

Noting that the project's second phase is on schedule, Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone said "travelers should plan alternate routes when possible," as the new traffic pattern will restrict traffic to a single lane in each direction in the roadwork area.

"Deterioration of the bridge surface over the past four decades has significantly advanced to the point that the entire deck needed to be replaced in its entirety," Arnone added in a release. "The work that will be completed under this contract will bring this bridge into compliance with current standards and will extend its life by an additional 30 to 40 years."

Since Aug. 5, the eastbound side traffic has been moved from the inside to outside lane. The plan for Aug. 19 is the same for the westbound lane — to move traffic flow from the inside to outside lane.

Pedestrians will not be permitted to cross the bridge during construction and  the speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph during bridge project.

All vehicular travel lanes are expected to be restored to normal operation by mid-October.
