Obituary: Dorothy Theresa McCarthy, Grandmother to 50

Services are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday

Dorothy Theresa McCarthy was brought to heaven on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013.  

Dorothy was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Merz from Cincinnati, Ohio. She married Joseph McCarthy from Hoboken and eventually settled in Middletown where they raised 12 children.

She is predeceased by her husband Joseph, brothers Richard and Robert, her sister Jean Kearney, and granddaughter Katie McCarthy.

Dorothy is survived by sisters Margaret Re and Mary Rose Kaiser and sister-in-law Kater Merz as well as her 12 children and their spouses: Joseph and wife Patricia, John, Stephen and wife Debra, David and wife Linda, Margaret McCormick and husband Michael, Dorothy Westlake and husband James, James and wife AnnMarie, Thomas and wife Dawn, Michael and wife Cristin, Timothy and wife Melany, and Kevin and wife Eileen.  

She is also the blessed grandmother of 50 grandchildren, 25 girls and 25 boys, ages ranging from 32 years to five years, and one great-grandson.

St. Mary’s Parish of Middletown was her home for 58 years. As a devout Catholic, she attended daily mass and always enjoyed her breakfast club afterwards. She enjoyed a full life which included charitable works, gardening, bowling, cards, swimming, and golf.  Her greatest joy was her family and being with her children and grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Mary Mother of God Church, 19 Cherry Tree Farm Rd, Middletown. 

A Funeral Liturgy will be offered Thursday, Oct. 31 at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Mother of God Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
