John Long, 85, of Middletown passed peacefully at home, surrounded by loving family and friends on April 4th, 2014. Born and raised in Jersey City,John, while still in high school, enlisted to serve in World War II. He was a proud Army veteran and also served under Military Sea Transport, responsible for delivering troops and supplies during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

At the time he earned his Masters License, he was the youngest candidate to do so. He attributed this great accomplishment to a strong work ethic and “burning the midnight oil.” After seven years as a Panama Canal Zone Pilot, he returned with his young family to settle in Middletown. A loyal member of the Master, Mates & Pilots Union, he joyfully sailed as Captain around the world until his retirement in 1995.

His passions were cool cars, delicious foods, daily mass, reading and viewing anything related to history, and keeping current with his friends and colleagues through M, M & P Union functions.

John is predeceased by his brother the Rev. Jeremiah Long, sisters Eleanor Cosgrove, Elizabeth Schmidt, and Eileen O’Leary. Surviving are his devoted wife of 49 years Cecelia, sons and daughter in law Jeremiah and Carol Ann Long of Madison, Ct, Daniel Long of Middletown, NJ, brother Richard Long of North Arlington, NJ, and grandchildren Cassandra and Jeremy Long.

John was a communicant of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Holmdel, NJ, a proud member of the U.S. Merchant Marine Veterans Society, and a member of the Christian Brothers Academy Father’s Club.
