Obituary: Walter F. Barber, 82, Middletown VFW Post Commander

Services scheduled for Monday and Tuesday

Walter F. Barber, Jr., 82, of Old Bridge died on Nov. 21, 2013 at Arnold Walter Nursing Home in Holmdel.

He was born in Newark and moved to Middletown from Irvington in 1959 after having spent many summers in Highlands between 1931 and 1958.

Walter graduated from St. Peter's College in Jersey City in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He worked for Purolator Inc. in Rahway from 1948 to 1987 where he was Administrative Sales Manager and Government Contracts Administrator. He later worked for the Garden State Parkway as a toll collector from 1988 to 2001.

Walter served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

He was a member of Leonardo Memorial Post No. 338 of the American Legion from 1959 and served as Commander for two terms. Walter was also a member of VFW Post No. 2179 in Middletown from 1975 where he also served as Commander for a term.

He received numerous citations and awards from various civic and military organizations from the Middletown Elks and Township Committee to the New Jersey State Senate. Walter even earned citations and awards from as far away as Quebec, Canada; all for his outstanding work with veterans and the community. In 1985-86 Walter served as Grand (State) Commander of New Jersey Military Order of the Cootie.

Surviving are his two sons, Michael Barber and his wife Denise of Leonardo, John Barber of Old Bridge; his daughter, Wendy McGrath and her husband William of Port Monmouth; his five grandchildren and his three great-grandchildren; his brother, Raymond Barber and his wife Maureen of Beaufort, NC; and his nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine's RC Church, 110 Bray Ave., Middletown.
