Arrest Made in Ranger Hit and Run

A Morganville man is being held in jail on several charges stemming from an incident wherein he allegedly ran down a Monmouth County park ranger who was in the process of investigating him at a scene in the section of .

According to records, Ranger William Stevenson III was struck by the vehicle of Anthony Powell, 46, of Oak Street, Morganville, on Thursday at about 11:30 a.m.

The ranger was investigating Powell for allegedly playing his radio too loud and being in possession of an open container of alcohol at (), Detective Lt. Steve Dollinger said.

Stevenson was attempting to obtain identification from Powell when Powell got into his vehicle and fled the scene, striking the ranger in the process, according to Dollinger.

Upon his fleeing, a description of Powell’s vehicle was provided to surrounding police agencies. He was subsequently stopped on Port Monmouth Road by the Keansburg police and taken into custody by Middletown police.

Cpl. Patricia Colangelo conducted the investigation, which resulted in Powell being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and assault by auto.

He was held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold, on $100,000.00 bail with no 10 percent option, set by Judge Richard Thompson.

Stevenson was treated at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, and released.
