Arresting Update: Shoplifting, Marijuana

Middletown police arrested the following people recently on shoplifting and marijuana possession charges ...

On Sept. 25 at 8:20 p.m., Patrolman James Beirne responded to the ShopRite supermarket, Route 35, in reference to a report of a shoplifting.

Upon arrival, he was advised by store security that they had observed Gabrielle Santopietro, 22, of 7th Street in Union Beach, NJ, attempt to steal two packages of cosmetics and leave the store without paying.

Officer Beirne arrested and charged Santopietro with shoplifting. She was transported to police headquarters for processing and was released pending a court date.

On Sept. 23 at 3:55 p.m., Patrolman Jason Caruso responded to the Foodtown supermarket, Route 36, in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, in reference to a report of a shoplifting.

Upon arrival, the officer was advised by store security that they had observed Shawn Smith, 39, of Wood Avenue, Port Monmouth, leave the store with a case of Coors Lite beer without paying.

Officer Caruso arrested and charged Smith with shoplifting.

He was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and bail was set at $15,000 with no 10 percent option set by Judge Richard Thompson.

Smith was held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold.

On Sept. 22 at 11:10 a.m., Patrolman Frank Mazza was on patrol in the area of Newman Springs Road when he stopped a vehicle for a seatbelt violation. Officer Mazza approached the driver, identified as Rebecca Broome, 18, of Pine Island Terrace, Cliffwood Beach, when he detected an odor of raw marijuana coming from inside the car.

Officer Mazza conducted an investigation that resulted in the recovery of marijuana and a pipe used for smoking marijuana from the vehicle and the arrest of Broome.

Broome was transported to police headquarters where she was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly persons offenses.

She was processed and released pending a court date.
