Curfew In Place for Halloween, 'Mischief Night'

Children under 18 must be off the streets by 8 p.m. on Oct. 30 and 31

Citing issues in years past, trick-or-treating must end by 7 p.m. on Halloween, Middletown officials said this week.

Further, children under 18 years old must return home by 8 p.m. that night, and also the day prior on Oct. 30 for what is known as “mischief night,” according to a Township Committee resolution.

The request for the curfew was made by Middletown’s police chief, as “substantial damage has occurred to public and private property," on those days in the past, "mostly late at night and by persons under 18 years of age.”

“Many residents of the township have been harassed and disturbed in the quiet enjoyment of their homes by unauthorized entry onto their property after normal trick-or-treating has been concluded,” the resolution states.

Children can be outside past 8 p.m. on Oct. 30 and 31 provided they are accompanied by an adult or heading to a specific location “in a direct fashion,” according to the resolution.
