Local Man Indicted in Bevacqua's Deli Armed Robbery Case

A North Middletown man stands accused of holding up his neighborhood deli with a gun.

A grand jury issued an indictment Thursday in the case of an armed robbery of a neighborhood deli.

Michael Crupi, 36, of Linden Avenue in Middletown will stand trial on charges he committed an armed robbery of Bevaqua's Deli on March 25, located just a few blocks away from his home address.

Crupi is charged with the second-degree crimes of armed robbery with a handgun, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a handgun for unlawful purpose. A defendant accused of a second degree crime faces 5-10 years in prison if convicted.

He also faces charges of theft of $400, possession of heroin, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Crupi entered the neighborhood deli in North Middletown around 5 p.m. on a Monday, according to the owner who spoke with Patch after the incident. He allegedly pointed a gun at the owner, demanded cash from the register, and took off
He was later arrested when his name turned up during an investigation into two Staten Island armed robberies.

He was arrested by Holmdel Police and charged with the armed robbery of a Gamestop store on May 7.

He is being held in the Monmouth County Jail in lieu of $480,000 bail.

The grand jury decision to indict Crupi on the charges is a formal charge, not a conviction. A defendant is innocent unless proven guilty under the law.
