Middletown Man Accused of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

A Middletown police officer suffered stab wounds after responding to a report of a drug overdose on Suffolk Lane Wednesday morning.

Deputy Chief R. Craig Weber said Patrolman Frank Mazza was injured while he and other officers attempted to subdue 24-year-old Scott H. Knudsen, of Suffolk Lane, early Wednesday morning.

Mazza, Patrolman Lawrence Seymour, Patrolman Savvas Roumeliotis and Patrolwoman Larisa Doriety responded to a report of a drug overdose at the Suffolk Lane home at 4 a.m. When officers arrived at the home, they found Knudsen armed with a knife, Weber said.

Knudsen became combative and attacked the officers, according to Weber. He allegedly tried to stab officers as they placed him under arrest. Mazzza sustained stab wounds during the incident. He and Knudsen were treated at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank and released.

Knudsen was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault on a police officer and weapons possession charges. His bail was set at $510,000 with no option to post 10 percent of the bond.
