A 12-year-old girl died after she suffered "a sudden cardiac episode" after running at Sunnyside Recreation Area in Middletown, said Middletown Township Police Lt. Stephen Dollinger Tuesday.

Her name or hometown have not been released.

Police were called to the site off Middletown-Lincroft Road at 7:32 p.m. after they received a call about a girl who was not breathing. Police said they learned she had been out running.

According to Middletown First Aid Spokesman Bob Pfleger, the police used their defibrillator, and got a faint pulse back.

Lincroft First Aid rushed the girl to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank with the MONOC paramedics, with lots of police assistance along the way, said Pfleger.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The police and first aid gave everything they had, said Pfleger in an email Wednesday morning. "Our loss is pale compared to the parents, family, and friends of the child, but those of us involved in emergency services feel this loss greatly," he said.

A debriefing is being scheduled in Lincroft to offer support to first responders.
