UPDATE: Middletown South Teacher Collapses at Tindall Park, Reports Say

Nick Catania is also the head boys basketball coach at Point Pleasant Beach High School.

A Middletown High School South physical education teacher and Point Pleasant Beach High School boys basketball coach collapsed at Tindall Park Monday morning, according to an Asbury Park Press report.

Nick Catania was warming up before a team-building tennis activity as part of the district's in-service day, according to the report.

Middletown First Aid spokesman Bob Pfleger said that CPR was in progress when emergency services arrived. Middletown Township Police Patrolman Thomas Hughes operated a defibrillator, according to Det. Let. Stephen Dollinger.

The defibrillator was used twice, Pfleger said.

MONOC paramedics and First Aid transported him to the hospital. Middletown, Port Monmouth and Leonardo squads responded.

Catania, who led the Garnet Gulls to their first NJSIAA Group I title last winter, was in the intensive care unit at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank on Monday night after collapsing earlier in the day and requiring CPR until the paramedics arrived, according to Shore Sports Network.
