Two Middletown Firefighters Injured Battling Orange Skye Day Spa Blaze

Firefighters were called to an unoccupied building around 3 a.m. Monday.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling flames at the former Orange Skye Day Spa in Middletown early Monday morning, according to Township Fire Department Public Information Officer John Isaksen.

Both were transported to Riverview Medical Center where they were treated and released.

According to Isaksen, the fire department was called to 254 Route 35 South around 3 a.m. after receiving a report of a possible building fire near the intersection of 35 and Pine Street.

Third Assistant Chief Tony Citarella was first on the scene and confirmed a fire on the second floor of the unoccupied, two-and-a-half story building that had been converted from a residential home into a business, according to Isaksen.

The fire spread into the attic and burned through the roof of the building before the blaze was brought under control at about 3:45 a.m. Firefighters remained on the scene until about 6 a.m. The building sustained "extensive damage," according to Isaksen.

The right lane of Route 35 South was closed by the Township Fire Police during the incident.

About 50 firefighters from four Middletown fire companies, including Middletown, River Plaza, Old Village and Community, responded to the scene under the command of Department Chief John D’Altilio.

Middletown Township Fire Department Air Unit and the Fairview, Lincroft, and Middletown First Aid Squads also responded to the scene.

The fire is being investigated by the Monmouth County Fire Marshall’s office.
