Freeholder Amy Mallet Explains County Politics to Brookdale Students

Presentation included explanation of 'freeholder' title

What is a freeholder?

That question and others surrounding the role of county government were topics of discussion for students in an American National Government class recently at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft. The discussion was led by Freeholder Amy A. Mallet, a Fair Haven resident.

"Because New Jersey is the only state in the nation that uses the term 'freeholder' to identify a county elected official, there is some ambiguity about what we do," Mallet said. "This discussion gave perspective to what is often an abstract understanding of local government."

The course schedule includes such topics as the founding principles of government, federalism, state’s rights, congress, the presidency, political parties, interest groups and public policy.

I am a product of public schools, from elementary through graduate school, so I truly appreciate the opportunity to share my experience with students who are determining their path, or perhaps taking a new direction in life," Mallet said.

Mallet delivered a PowerPoint presentation that offered a brief history of Monmouth County and the Board of Chosen Freeholders. For instance, students learned that the term "freeholder" is a holdover to a time when it meant anyone who owned land "free and clear." Those persons who were elected to represent those landowners were called "chosen freeholders."

Mallet focused her presentation on Human Services and Social Services, areas of county government where she is the direct liaison. The discussion stressed the importance of getting involved in local government.

She suggested that the students attend public meetings, establish a dialogue with elected officials and familiarize themselves with the county website, www.visitmonmouth.com.

"Brookdale students attend one of the finest two-year learning institutions in the state," Mallet said. "The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has always supported the college and its students, and it’s important they know they have the board’s continued support."
