Goin' Fishing? Trout Season is Opening

Garvey's Pond and Shadow Lake in Middletown have been stocked.

If you’re fishing for some pre-Easter activity, the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife is reminding people that tomorrow is opening day of trout season and local bodies of water have been stocked.

The season officially opens at 8 a.m. tomorrow for what the DEP says is the “most anticipated day on the annual fishing calendar.”

More than 180,000 brown, brook and rainbow hatchery trout will be stocked in about 200 lakes, ponds and streams across New Jersey.

In Middletown, 160 trout will be stocked in in the Navesink section for opening day; and another 580 fish will be stocked in Shadow Lake, in the River Plaza section.

Each of the Middletown bodies of water will then get stocked weekly through April. Another 430 trout will be stocked in on Wednesday of next week, Friday of the next and Tuesday of the final week in April, for a total of 1870 fish.

At Garvey’s, another 120 trout will be stocked on Wednesday of next week, Friday the following week and Tuesday the last week of the month, for a total of 520.
