Ship unloads ordnance at EARLE after more than eight months out

The USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) docked at  Naval Weapons Station Earle's pier, in the Leonardo section of Middletown, last week to offload ordnance remaining from her recently concluded eight-and-a-half-month deployment.

The Kearsarge is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship designed to transport and land US Marines on shore, as well as tanks, trucks, artillery, and all the supplies needed to support operations.

During the deployment, a crew comprised of more than 2,500 sailors and embarked marines, from Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) 26th, played a vital role in military operations in the Middle East region and Mediterranean Sea, including their involvement in joint combat operations with NATO forces during operations Odyssey Dawn and Unified Protector in Libya.
