Celebrate New Jersey Honors Essay Winners

Read the winning entries here. One is about a blue spotted salamander, and the other is about Ellis Island.

Local students James Burns and Kylie Swanson of River Plaza Elementary were honored on May 21st at Monmouth University by “Celebrate New Jersey.”   It is an organization that offers an annual writing contest to inspire pride and appreciation for all New Jersey has to offer. Fourth-graders in the state research and write articles of their choosing about New Jersey arts, business, people, science, sports, health and wellness, or travel. Articles are selected for publication in the New Jersey Scoop, an online newspaper. (See PDFs.)

The contest is open to all fourth-graders in New Jersey, and winners are selected in each region. Fourth-grade teachers who participate are allowed to submit up to six essays.  James and Kylie's essays were among the six chosen from Mrs. Lynda Hayden's class, and were then selected by a panel of judges at "Celebrate New Jersey."

See James Burns' piece on the blue spotted salamander, titled "The Most Amazing Animal," and Kylie Swanson's essay on Ellis Island, both attached to this post.
