'Bye Bye Birdie' Opens at HS South

The classic 1960s musical will run at the high school tonight through Saturday.

It’s time to “put on a happy face” and get to Southside Theater for opening night of Bye Bye Birdie.

Curtain time is 7 p.m. for the high school production of the Tony Award-winning 1960s musical that will run tonight, Friday and Saturday.

The musical spoofs Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army and all the teen and adult angst and idol-worship swooning that comes with it.

The star, called Conrad Birdie, comes to small town U.S.A, or Sweet Apple Ohio, to get “one last kiss” from a teen girl who won a contest to do the honor in sending the star off to war in an all-American style promotion.

All of Sweet Apple gets drawn into the drama spearheaded by Birdie’s promoter, Albert Peterson and his secretary/love interest, Rose Alvarez.

In the middle of all the swooning and teen drama over Birdie, some classic songs are staged, such as “Put on a Happy Face,” “What’s the Matter with Kids Today,” and more.

The show’s book is by Michael Stewart, with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams.

Break a leg and swoon with all your might, South performers!
